Prizes will include a Sony Xperia smartphone and tablet, plus an invitation to the Sony World Photography Awards gala ceremony in London on 23 April.
World Photography Organisation creative director Astrid Merget Motsenigos said: ‘With today’s incredible technology at our fingertips, we have the ability to capture the everyday events that actually form part of the unique fabric of our lives.
‘Most of us document our own history every day with our mobile phones and think nothing of it.
‘This category allows us to look a little closer at those otherwise ordinary moments.’
Entries will be shortlisted by a panel that includes Chris Hudson, group art editor of National Geographic Traveller UK.
Shortlisted entries are due to be published on the World Photography Organisation website, before the winner is chosen by public vote from 10-17 March.
In a statement, organisers added: ‘The latest camera technology in mobile phones has created increased accessibility for photographers.
‘Moments can be captured in just about any circumstances or location and everyone with access to a phone can visually document day-to-day life.
‘The mobile phone category at the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards recognises this new creative freedom and how mobile photography has helped redefine the way in which photographers approach their art.’
